Poultry, Aquaculture & Livestock Initiatives

Ma Nyande Women's Development Organization (MNWDO) empowers women and youth in Sierra Leone through its Poultry, Aquaculture, and Livestock Initiatives, focused on diversifying agricultural income and improving nutrition in rural communities like Bo and Falaba Districts. By promoting poultry farming, tilapia aquaculture in azolla ponds, and other livestock activities, MNWDO creates sustainable livelihoods and enhances food security.

Launched in 2023, this project provides training, resources, and market linkages to women farmers, enabling them to manage poultry hatcheries and fish farms. Despite setbacks like the loss of 7,000 fish to floods in 2023, MNWDO has rebuilt, achieving successful chick growth and tilapia production. The initiative collaborates with Njala University to engage students in internships, fostering innovation and youth involvement in modern farming practices.

Supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and UN Women, the project integrates with Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) to fund equipment and inputs. By offering protein-rich food sources and income opportunities, MNWDO aligns with Sierra Leone’s Feed Salone initiative, making agriculture more attractive and viable for women and youth.

What we're doing!

MNWDO is transforming rural livelihoods through poultry, aquaculture, and livestock initiatives with the following interventions:

  • Training women and youth in poultry farming and hatchery management for sustainable egg and meat production.
  • Supporting tilapia aquaculture in azolla ponds to provide protein and income.
  • Partnering with Njala University for internships to drive innovation in livestock farming.
  • Facilitating market access through cooperative models and local sales networks.
